Digital Accessibility – Design With Abil 2018-02-18T19:34:05+00:00

The Problem

Like education, many perceive technology to be a great equalizer in the human experience. Unfortunately, with the widespread adoption of web-based applications and devices, many people living with disabilities are being left out, limited, and undercut. One out of every seven people is living with a disability, and the ratio is more than double for seniors in Canada. There are now more than five million people over the age of 65 in Canada, and this number will double by 2040.

Why Abil

In 2005, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act was passed with the intention of improving digital accessibility. Sadly, it has created a culture of striving for compliance. We believe that accessibility is about more than checking boxes. At Abil, we are passionate about creating digital experiences that work for all users, regardless of their physical ability or age.

We Design With

We design with youth, with seniors, and with people living with disabilities throughout the entire design process. This approach is more effective than engaging users in just QA and testing. By designing with instead of designing for, we ensure that digital experiences are enjoyed by any user on any device.

We All Use It

Have you ever changed the brightness on your phone? Or used an electric toothbrush? Or watched a silent video? Accessible design has already impacted you. There are a billion people living with disabilities worldwide, but accessible design is used by every single person.

How We Do It

Remediate

Check compliance levels based on government policies. Inspect the customer experiences using a variety of assistive technologies. Rectify issues so that the digital platform is usable by all users, on all devices.

Training

Identify employee’s role and capacity. Build awareness and empathy towards diverse users. Introduce assistive technologies and train employees with tools to build accessible experiences.

Co-Design

Provide tools and access to space with assistive technology. Facilitate sessions with employees and diverse users. Problem solve and iterate with diverse users through a product’s development.

Testing

Check the quality of interaction of the website. Run tests with diverse users and assistive technologies on different platforms. Identify issues and resolve them at regular intervals.

Advising

Foresee budget implications of accessibility laws. Establish an accessibility strategy. Integrate accessibility in the development process. Write policies regarding hiring and workplace standards. Build an accessibility lab.

What’s In It For You

Increase Audience

15% of Canada’s population living with a disability and this will increase in the next 20 years. While businesses race to avoid government penalties for non-compliance, a lucrative opportunity lies in creating great digital experiences that are accessible.

Shift Mindsets

Many product owners, managers, designers, and developers are irritated by accessibility. We inspire teams to build accessible experiences not because they have to, but because it is meaningful and beneficial for the business to do so.

Spark Innovation

How do you make a service or product more customizable? How can you make an experience easier for someone that is aging? What companies are leading the way? Have no doubt, these questions are challenging and spark creativity.
